How to Usher in Your Brand Audit Before the Combine

The Superbowl is over but the memes and highlights of that halftime performance will live on social media profiles for years to come.

Now that the NFL season has officially concluded and head coaches are in place, talent evaluations are underway. The league’s focus will be on the upcoming draft class. That means if it wasn’t on before, the page monitoring is certainly on high alert now. Teams are narrowing down the focus and evaluating “off-the-field” performance. What kind of person is this athlete off the field? You can learn a lot from what a person posts, reposts, and likes online.

In our previous post, we discussed the importance of “off-field performance training”. We are two weeks from the NFL Combine and 10 weeks from the NFL Draft. Time is of the essence so you should be getting your reps in with your brand workouts.

Today’s branding portion of your NFL draft plan will be the speed drill.

As a reminder …

DRILL #1 - SPEED

Quickly, with speed, complete a digital audit. That means scrubbing the internet (particularly social media) and removing anything that may have a negative connotation on your reputation. You can also work with a professional (and/or service) to remove negative results from search engines and improve your overall online reputation. You are in control of how much of your off-the-field life you share. Choose wisely. You’ll want to choose before the choice is made for you. Don’t get caught in the web of social media pitfalls.

Digital brand audits can be easy or complicated depending on how active you have been on social media.

Take a look at all of your profiles. Review your social media profiles and ask yourself if the message you are portraying is the one you want. Instagram, Twitter (now known as X), Twitch, Kick, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, etc. all have ways for you to review and delete posts, comments, likes, and shares. However, I am sure you do not have time to figure out how to conduct bulk deletes therefore the hyperlinks above go to helpful articles and/or videos for each platform. What you want to look for is anything potentially unflattering. Anything that you may have to explain or could offend should be removed. Unfortunately, these audits do not automatically handle potential screen grabs and screenshots. That’s why the speed of this drill is important. Also, while you’re at it, change all of your passwords and make sure they are strong.

Moving forward, your social channels should be a healthy mix. To show a 360 view of you as an athlete, you will likely want to share a mix of personal behind-the-scenes and on-the-field talent. Show that you are human but be careful about oversharing too. It all is going to depend on your goals but having someone on your team who can take an objective look is key.
